Sub-commission No.6: Consideration of the Cultural Heritage in Relation to the Development of the Urban Areas, Researches on the Problematic case of the Tomonoura Bay

In Japan there are several issues concerning the urban development in Cultural Heritage protected areas. As for instance, traffic problems and landscape problematic can be found in every Heritage Site. In order reflect properly on the possible solutions for these problematic, the commission is composed by experts of Cultural Heritage, Urban Planning and Traffic Planning. In September 2005, the commission issued “the urgent proposal for a Tomonoura Harbor City Planning that can emphasize the history of the site” From March 2007, this commission, among all the projects it handled, focused its efforts on the problem of Tomonoura Bridge reclamation by Fukuyama City.

Sub-commission No.7: Researches on the Traffic Issues in the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

Still, looking among the surveys conducted by the 6th commission until now, we find the researchers conducted by a special commission on the traffic problematic of the historic villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama.



Sub-commission No.8: Survey on the Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites in Buffer Zones

Still, among the problems handled by the 6th commission, this commission worked on a survey for the protection of Cultural Heritage Sites located in buffer zones.



Sub-commission No.9: Survey on the Routes of Korean Embassies.

In occasion of the succession of a new shogun in the Tokugawa family, the Korean royal family used to send embassies to Edo, in order to pay its homage. This fact indicates that in Edo period, even during the alleged sakoku era, Japan maintained rich relationships with the neighborhood countries in East Asia. Besides the 500 Korean diplomats, the parade was also composed by the Tsushima Island Commander, and attendants from every clan. In total, a parade of 1500 people used to travel across cities and costal road for 10 months circa, this colorful and rich pageant became an international event, and also a way to create and maintain huge infrastructures. Among the buildings and the public constructions erected for this purpose, those which survived to our days are few, but they still shape the lineage of inheritance that can be called “the Heritage of the Korean Envoys in Japan”. In fact, this route that extended between Japan and South Korea, is a common Cultural Heritage. Exactly as the pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compostela, also Korea and Japan are demanding the establishment of a linear Cultural Heritage Site. In 2007, after exactly 400 years from the dispatch of the first Korean embassy, to celebrate this date, special events took place all over the two countries. On November 11th of the same year, with the opening of the symposium: “Toward the Common Cultural Heritage between Japan and Korea: the Routes of Joseon Envoys”, the ICOMOS National Committees of Korea and Japan recognized the centrally of this topic and decided to establish the sub-commission to carry out this research project.

Sub-commission No.10: Researches on the Repainting Methodologies Historic Buildings

The commission conducted a survey on the peculiar methodologies of Japan when about the repainting of historic monuments.
