The Great East Japan Earthquake
The human damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake as of September 16 was 15,790 dead, 4,056
missing, and approximately 5,500 injured. Further, according to a preliminary damage report on house damage
by the Architectural Institute of Japan2), approximately 105,000 houses were completely damaged and
approximately 107,000 were partially destroyed. Most of this human and residential damage was caused by the
tsunami.
The report “The Great East JAPAN Earthquake -Report on the Damage to the Cultural Heritage Properties” was issued and distributed to experts from several countries, in November, in occasion of the ICOMOS General Assembly.

The first immediate report of the Japan ICOMOS National Committee on the “Damages of National Properties Caused by Tohoku Pacific Earthquake” has been issued and it will be distributed to all ICOMOS National committees as well as to the ICOMOS International Office.

From the President
For those who has shown your concern upon this calamity, thank you very much. We all are struck by the impact
of the disaster. We are hoping for the best under this awful time. We appreciate ICOMOS’s solidarity.
Due to this extraordinary circumstance, we still do not have an ample assessment of disaster affected cultural
heritage. The members of ICOMOS are in accord to do our best during the course of recovery.
